Abstract Poet, Sylvia Trent Auxier was born on December 29, 1900 in Pike County Kentucky, the daughter of Thomas J. and Dolly May Trent. She graduated from Pikeville College with a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1959. She married Jean Auxier, who served as U.S. Attorney for Eastern Kentucky and Pike County Circuit Judge. Talitha Ethel Powell McClure Ballad Collection

Abstract

Talitha Ethel McClure (nee Powell) compiled ballad texts in 1915 by for a contest initiated by Berea College President, William G. Frost.   McClure received the prize for collecting the most lyrics. Her mother, Talitha Powell (nee Davis), provided ballad texts to British collector, Cecil Sharp, during a visit to Berea in 1917.

Tate Building Documentation Collection

Abstract

In 1929, W.B. Tate began construction of the Tate Building in Berea, Kentucky, on a lot he had purchased in 1924 from S.E. Welch. The construction of this brick building followed the destruction of the wooden frame buildings on the lot, during the "Welch block" fire shortly after its purchase in 1924. Initially, the Tate Building served as a hotel, and in the 1950s the bottom floor was converted to store fronts. Various businesses have operated in the space during the past six decades.
