Abstract Homer C. Ledford was an instrument maker and bluegrass musician from Winchester, Kentucky who specialized in making dulcimers, banjos, and mandolins. He was born in Alpine, Tennessee, where he started building instruments at an early age. At age eighteen he became a student at John C. Scope and Contents This collection documents several early country music radio performers, their sponsors and radio stations, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s. The collection includes promotional material for radio stations, country music performers, and sponsors in the form of songbooks, family photo albums, calendars, program histories, and autograph books. Scope and Contents This collection consists of twenty three 7 inch audio tape reels. Fourteen mostly contain commercials for Berea businesses and local news heard on Berea radio station WKXO in the 1970s. WKXO announcers are Kyle Sowers and Hugh Murphy. Also included among these are a few syndicated programs such as Lum and Abner, Forward in Faith, and Country Music Magazine. Twenty audio cassette copies of network radio news programs 1940-1945 covering the progress of World War Two. Included among the subjects covered are the invasion of France; Pearl Harbor attack, U.S. declaration of war, Battle of Midway, D-Day, Atomic bomb dropping, Japanese surrender, VE Day, concentration camps, death of President Roosevelt, and election of Harry Truman.

Abstract The collecting activity reflected in this collection began in the early 1950s and continued well into the 1970s. After Rueben Powell’s 1968 retirement from work as chief utility engineer at Wright Patterson Airforce Base in Ohio, Powell and his wife Retha started the Renfro Valley Tape Club as a means of sharing the fruits of his collecting with other country music fans.
