Established in 1989, the Special Learning Opportunities Committee was established to deal with learning opportunities outside established programs and courses regularly offered during Fall and Spring academic terms. Within its purview were Short Term courses, Independent Majors, Independent Studies, and Field Study projects. The Committee also reviewed policies and practices for the programs, proposing modifications to the Academic Program Council.

Abstract Hutchins, born in 1850 and native of Brooklyn, New York, attended Oberlin College, Yale University, and Oberlin Theological Seminary.
