Abstract

Reorganization of Berea College in 1938 lead to the instititution being formally divided into three schools: the Foundation School (1st through 10th grade), the Lower Division (Grades 11-12, first two years of college) and Upper Division (third and fourth year of college). Following further evaluation in 1942, and a five-year process of change, the institution was again reorganized in 1947 into the Fundation School (elementary through 12th grade, with vocational emphasis for stundents not going to college) and the College (including freshman through senior years and a fifth year or "preceding year" designed to serve those needing a transition period to prepare for college level work). The Self-Study Commission studied and made recommendations regarding the impact of changes created by the 1947 reorganization of the institution.
