Katherine Jackson French Ballad Collection

Abstract Katherine Jackson French was influenced to collect mountain ballads through friends who had attended a lecture—in 1905—at which two instructors from Berea College, Kentucky, spoke about the uncollected ballads in the mountains of Kentucky.  She was writing her dissertation at Columbia University at the time and she delayed investigating the matter of collecting mountain ballads until 1909 when she returned to London, Kentucky, to attend her mother who was ill. Bradley Kincaid Collection

Abstract

This collection contains correspondence, business records, photographs, news clippings, songbooks, and sheet music from radio ballad singer Bradley Kincaid. Collection sound recordings include interviews of Kincaid and his associates, a 1974 Kincaid performance at the Renfro Valley Traditional Music Festival, a 1974 recording of the song "Who Is Bradley Kincaid" composed and performed by Vince Matthews and Glen Sherley and copies of Kincaid's commercial 78 rpm discs (1928-1947).

Lee Knight Collection

Abstract

Lee Knight grew up in the Adirondack Mountain area of New York State. He moved to North Carolina as the result of an interest in the Anglo, European and Native American music and stories of the Southern Appalachians developed during college. In addition to the Adirondacks and Appalachians, he has collected songs and stories from other parts of the world, including England, Scotland, Central Asia, Columbia and the Amazon region of Peru.

Roger Howell Memory Collection

Talitha Ethel Powell McClure Ballad Collection

Abstract

Talitha Ethel McClure (nee Powell) compiled ballad texts in 1915 by for a contest initiated by Berea College President, William G. Frost.   McClure received the prize for collecting the most lyrics. Her mother, Talitha Powell (nee Davis), provided ballad texts to British collector, Cecil Sharp, during a visit to Berea in 1917.

William H. Tallmadge Baptist Hymnody Collection

Wilson Reeves Collection
