Scope and Contents

The Juanita M. Kreps photographs, documents, and recordings at Hutchins Library are not her official papers. The Juanita Morris Kreps papers (https://archives.lib.duke.edu/catalog/krepsjuanitamorris) are held by Duke University, where she taught for many years. The items at Berea College were mostly framed photographs, government documents, special honors, and audio or video tapes that came from Dr. Kreps’s office as a gift in 2002. This collection may be of interest to researchers studying economics, feminism, ageism, and the accomplishments of Appalachian leaders.

Biographical Note

Juanita Morris Kreps was born January 11, 1921 in Lynch, Kentucky. Graduating from Berea College in 1942, she went on to pursue a Ph.D. in economics at Duke University. Kreps was awarded numerous awards for her outstanding achievements in the field of economics. Most notably, Kreps went on to serve as the first woman Secretary of Commerce under the presidency of Jimmy Carter. Kreps also served on numerous corporate boards, such as American Telephone & Telegraph Company; Armco Inc.; Chrysler Corporation; Citicorp; Deere & Company; Eastman Kodak Company, J.C. Penney Company, Inc. and the New York Stock Exchange. She also was a member of the Berea College Board of Trustees for twenty-six years.

Dr. Kerps’s published writings include several volumes represented in the collection: The Sick, Disabled and Aged (1965); Principles of Economics (1965), The Future of Aging and the Aged (1971); Contemporary Labor Economics (1974), and Sex in the Marketplace: American Women at Work (1978). Through her teaching and writings, Kreps brought awareness to the experiences of women in the work force in the 1970s. She also contributed valuable insights into the field of Economics and the financial complications of aging. Kreps died on July 5th, 2010 in Durnham, North Carolina.

Abstract

This collection comprises photographs, certificates, plaques, writings, and audio-visual recordings created primarily in the 1970s to 1990s. These resources document the life and accomplishments of educator and economist Juanita M. Kreps (1921-2010), a Berea College and Duke University graduate who served as the first female U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
