Abstract

In 1976 Berea College underwent an institutional self-evaluation with regard to sex discrimination as required by regulations under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. A committee of twenty-two staff and faculty members were charged with the review. This small collection contains materials and documents created as a result of this review.

Ira Jay Martin III Papers

Abstract Dr. Ira Jay Martin III was a fixture at Berea College serving as professor in the Philosophy and Religions Department for thirty-three years.  He was an instructor for two years before being promoted to Assistant Professor in 1946.  In the fall of 1966 he was appointed to the Henry Mixter Penniman Professorship, which he held until his retirement in 1977 (becoming an emeritus professor).  Martin published several books on a variety of topics in religion.  He was the author of ...

Abstract Joseph O. Van Hook was raised in Pulaski County, Kentucky and began teaching in a one-room school house in 1909. He came to Berea in 1910 and earned two diplomas from the Normal School. He served as an Army corporal during World War I and spent four years following the war teaching in China at the Shanghai American School (1921-1925). Abstract John Bell Stephenson (1937-1994) was born in Staunton, Virginia, to Louis Stephenson and Edna Moles Stephenson. Stephenson earned a B.A. in sociology in 1959 from the College of William and Mary and his M.A. in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961. John F. Smith Papers

Abstract

John Franklin Smith taught in both the Berea College Academy School and the Normal School from 1911 to 1931.  Originally drawn to Berea to teach Rural Social Science, Smith also served as a publicity agent for serveral years and directed the College Sunday School for fifteen years.  Smith was a prolific writer, including a poet. Smith retired from Berea in 1931 due to illness.

Karl T. Waugh Papers

Abstract Karl T. Waugh was born to missionary parents in Cawnpore, India, in 1879, and attended primary and secondary schools in both India and the United States. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan (1900) and Harvard (1906) and taught at Harvard before going on to teach at the University of Chicago and Beloit College.
