W. O. Mize, J. T. Day, and Green Berry Swango founded Hazel Green Academy in 1880. Eventually, administration and financial support were shifted to agencies of the Disciples of Christ (Christian) Church, first under the Christian Women's Board of Missions in 1886, and then under the United Christian Missionary Society in 1919.
