The West-Vanhook family farm (Garrard County, Kentucky) was bought by F.A. Vanhook and his wife Nancy in 1884. They moved there, from Science Hill in Pulaski County, Kentucky. WHAS was the first licensed radio station in Kentucky when it started broadcasting on July 18, 1922. Early programming included news and sports coverage. The station aired the first live broadcast of the Kentucky Derby on May 16, 1925. William Ross Gordon began teaching at Berea in 1931 as a teacher in the Foundation-Junior High School. In 1932 he was promoted to the college department where he spent the next 36 years teaching philosophy and religion.
