Biographical / Historical

Sgt Hughland “Hoot” Hymer (2/26/1922 – 5/12/1944) was born in Fayette County, Kentucky to Nancy W. Hymer and E. B. Hymer. Hymer’s family, which included a sister and three brothers, resided in Berea, Kentucky. Hymer served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a B-24 radio operator who was assigned to the 830th Squadron of the 485th Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force. His bomb group completed training in Boise, ID in 1944 and it was on May 12, 1944 that the Bomb Group attacked the marshalling yards at Reggio, Italy. Hymer’s aircraft was hit and crashed into the bay of Naples and Hymer was lost at sea. He received a posthumous Purple Heart award.
