This collection is comprised of sound cassette recordings (1998-1999) by Tom Chase documenting the history of the Berea College men's basketball program.

Chase examines the relationship between sports and academic life throughout the interviews, pointing to Berea's emphasis on academic excellence. The interviews contain a wealth of information concerning the lives of players after graduation.

The collection contains interviews with players from Berea basketball's classic late-1920s era including Wilson Evans, Ted Wright, and Dick Chrisman.

Also included in the collection are written transcripts of the interviews. Inclusive dates of recordings: 1998-1999.

Biographical or Historical Information

Tom Chase had lived in Berea for only five years before undertaking the massive task of documenting thecollege's basketball history. Resulting from his research is the two volume B for Berea: the amazing story of Berea College basketball in the words of the men who played it (Volume 1: Triumph and toil, 1895-1969,Volume 2: Back to the mountaintop, 1970-2000) by Overmountain Press, 2000. Chase continues to reside in Berea.

The collection is arranged in two series as follows: Series I: Recorded interviews (in cassette tape format); arranged alphabetically by interviewee (given carrier number for identification) Series II: Transcripts of interviews; arranged alphabetically by interviewee.
