Abstract

The New Salem Baptist Church in Harold (Co. Floyd), Kentucky, was one of the original churches to enter into the New Salem Association of Baptists (constituted in 1825 in eastern Kentucky, armed from Burning Springs).  Built about the same time as the Association’s founding, the New Salem Baptist Church was built in an area originally called Harold Gap (now referred to as Old Harold Road).  Association records show that Simeon Justice, William Salisbury, and Alexander Lackey were messengers representing the New Salem church at the Association’s first meeting held in August of 1825. During this meeting, Simeon Justice was appointed Moderator and Alexander Lackey was elected the Clerk of the Association. The association’s name would change throughout the 19th century including name changes to: Regular United, Regular Primitive, Regular Baptist and Old Regular.  Today, the association is referred to as the New Salem Association of Old Regular Baptist of Jesus Christ and its member churches are referred to as Old Regular Baptists. The New Salem Baptist Church continues to be an active church and a member of the New Salem Association of Old Regular Baptist of Jesus Christ.
