Berea College Science Focus Program

Abstract

Starting in 1987, the Science Focus Program at Berea College enabled the College both to identify African American high school sophomores with ability in science and/or mathematics and to instruct and guide them in their preparation to enter college in science related fields.  Program participants spent four weeks on campus in an intensive educational experience and working in the College's labor program. The program appears to have run through 1999.

Abstract Children of God: An Oratorio on the Brotherhood of Man is a major choral work commissioned in 1956 by Berea College and the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States of America (NCC). Abstract

For nearly 100 years, Berea College Convocations has made lectures, concerts and the performing arts available to the students and the general public.  A significant part of students' educational experience at the College is offered through the Convocation series which, in addition to enlivening the intellectual, aesthetic and religious lives of students, provides common experiences for students, faculty, and staff.

Mountain Day

Abstract The first Mountain Day at Berea College was observed in 1875 for “enjoying the Fall colors and other natural wonders in the immediate vicinity and to provide a campus holiday free of classes and non-essential labor.”  It has become an annual tradition and in recent years groups -such as the Berea College Choir- sing to greet the rising of the sun.
