Boone Tavern Hotel

Abstract Historic Boone Tavern was built in 1909 at the suggestion of Nellie Frost, wife of Berea College president, William G. Frost. Named for Appalachian hero Daniel Boone has hosted visitors of Berea, Kentucky including the Dalai Lama, Henry Ford, President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, and Robert Frost. Berea College Hospital

Founded in 1899, Berea College Hospital appears this is the oldest college hospital in the United States, preceding Harvard's by one year. The hospital is no longer affiliated with the College and is currently administered by the Saint Joseph Health Systems under the name Saint Joseph, Berea.

Berea College Fire Department

Abstract

Starting in 1899, a fire brigade made up of students and known as the "Bucket Brigade," was established on campus and responded to calls both on and off campus. Formally established in 1905 by the College, the Fire Department served the campus and the city and was staffed by students. In 1966, the City of Berea took over responsibilities for operating the fire department ending what many affectionally referred to as the "College Fire Department."

Forest Department

Abstract In 1897, Berea College initiated a forestry effort—the same year as the Forest Reserve Organic Act and the first College forestry degree programs in the United States began. The effort was initiated by Professor Silas C. Mason with the goals of (1) offering general forestry education for students and (2) obtaining a source of wood and income for the College.
