Postcards: Mountain Scenes

This collection is comprised of postcards capturing scenes including the last stagecoach in Kentucky, logging on the Kentucky River, coal mines, moonshine stills, court day in Lexington, multiple scenes of tobacco cultivation and hemp cultivation, Shaker dwellings, and many others.

The majority of the postcards apparently pre-date 1930, and none come from the 1940s. Most come from three sources: McAdams and Morford of Lexington; Wrenn and King, also of Lexington; or Bagby and Howe Drug Company, of Louisville.  The Bagby postcards and some of the Wrenn postcards bear numbers that indicate they were within the Curt Teich series printed between 1913 and 1928. At least four were printed between 1900 and 1908, judging by the guidelines to dating Curt Teich postcards on their website. One card from Harrodsburg is labeled “CT American Art Colored” and numbered 3A229, which indicates it was published in 1933*; the number on another indicates 1936, the latest date identified for cards in the collection. Two postcards were printed in England, and one (of a mountain washday) in Germany.
