Born in Stockbridge, MA, 29 November 1815, Edward Henry Fairchild grew up in Brownhelm, Ohio,where his parents, Grandison and Nancy Fairchild, had a farm. He and his brother James were half of the first entering class at Oberlin College; he graduated in 1838. At age 21, after lecturing against slavery in Ohio as one of the "Seventy" sent out by Theodore Weld, he was commissioned by the American Anti-slavery Society for a three-month tour of Pennsylvania. Born in 1884 in South Dakota, Edwin Michael Hoffman, known as Michael, graduated from Oberlin College in 1907 with a B.A. Following graduation, he worked for the YMCA and, in 1914, married Mary Lindsay (Oberlin, 1910). During WWI, he served on a mission to Manchuria as a YMCA officer attached to US forces. Abstract
Elisabeth Sinclair Peck joined the Berea College faculty in 1912 and taught history until her retirement in 1953. Upon her retirement, she was appointed college historian by President Weatherford. She served in this role until her death in 1968. A prolific writer, Peck published numerous books on a range of topics—many involving the history and work of Berea College.
