Abstract In 1897, Berea College initiated a forestry effort—the same year as the Forest Reserve Organic Act and the first College forestry degree programs in the United States began. The effort was initiated by Professor Silas C. Mason with the goals of (1) offering general forestry education for students and (2) obtaining a source of wood and income for the College. Francis S. Hutchins Papers

Abstract Francis Stephenson Hutchins (b. 1902), a native of Northfield, Massachusetts, was educated at Oberlin College (A.B., 1923) and Yale University (M.A., 1933). Having worked in China as an undergraduate, Hutchins returned to China as an instructor in 1925 as part of the Yale-in-China Association's educational mission.
