Abstract Jane Wilhelmina Pierson was born in Ohio on July 24, 1917, the daughter of William and Barbara (Ries) Pierson. In 1939, she graduated from Mercy School of Nursing and later completed Midwifery training in the Frontier Nursing Service (1952). After working for five years in the maternity ward at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, she served for two years as a frontier nurse on horseback in the Bull Creek, Kentucky area. Abstract Joseph O. Van Hook was raised in Pulaski County, Kentucky and began teaching in a one-room school house in 1909. He came to Berea in 1910 and earned two diplomas from the Normal School. He served as an Army corporal during World War I and spent four years following the war teaching in China at the Shanghai American School (1921-1925). John F. Smith Papers

Abstract

John Franklin Smith taught in both the Berea College Academy School and the Normal School from 1911 to 1931.  Originally drawn to Berea to teach Rural Social Science, Smith also served as a publicity agent for serveral years and directed the College Sunday School for fifteen years.  Smith was a prolific writer, including a poet. Smith retired from Berea in 1931 due to illness.

March on Frankfort

Abstract

On Thursday, March 5, 1964, 170 Berea students and 30 faculty and townspeople joined approximately 10,000 other demonstrators for a March on Frankfort. At the March, demonstrators listened to speeches by Frank Stanley Jr., Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, D.E. King, and Ralph Abernathy. Speakers pleaded for the Governor Breathitt and state legislature to consider seriously the House-sponsored Public Accomodations Bill.
