Abstract
Starting in 1987, the Science Focus Program at Berea College enabled the College both to identify African American high school sophomores with ability in science and/or mathematics and to instruct and guide them in their preparation to enter college in science related fields. Program participants spent four weeks on campus in an intensive educational experience and working in the College's labor program. The program appears to have run through 1999.

Louis Charles Karpinski (1878 –1956) was an American mathematician born in Rochester, New York. Karpinski received a Teacher’s Diploma from Oswego State Normal School in 1897. In 1898, he went to Kentucky to teach at the normal department of Berea College. He would leave Berea in 1899 to enter Cornell University and would go on to receive his Dr. Phil. William Robert Hutcherson, born in Glassgow, Kentucky, on December 20, 1898, received his A.B. (1922) and A.M. (1924) from the University of Kentucky. Hutcherson continued with his graduate work during the summers at Chicago (1925-1927, 1929) while on the faculty at Berea College. Hutcherson first served as head of the department of the junior high school at Berea from 1924 to 1926.
