Abstract Berea students, faculty, and staff, along with many others, had previously participated in a 1964 march on the state capitol in Frankfort to lobby the Kentucky legislature to pass civil rights legislation. On March 7,1965, a small group of Bereans took part in a King-led march that had to turn back before arriving at Montgomery—during which a white minister from Boston was killed. Abstract Julia Allen (1896-1974) was recruited to Berea College in 1932 as Assistant Dean of Women to succeed Katherine Bowersox, who had been Dean of Women since 1907. A Kentucky native, Allen studied at both Mt. Holyoke and the University of Chicago. Allen also had worked in a factory, tutored Italian children in Chicago, and directed YWCA summer camps.
