Abstract The Carr Fork dam was constructed by the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is located 8.8 miles above the mouth of Carr Fork, a tributary of the North Fork of the Kentucky River. It was created to mitigate flooding along the North Fork of the Kentucky River, improve water quality, and provide public recreation. Abstract Hindman Settlement School traces its origins to education – recreation programs conducted in Knott and Perry counties, Kentucky by Katherine Pettit and May Stone during the summers of 1899-1901. They were funded by the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs and were aided by a group of women from urban areas. Abstract Joseph Addison Stucky was a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He received his education in the city schools and eventually graduated from the University of Louisville College of Medicine.  He set up practice in Lexington, Kentucky where specialized in ophthalmology and otolaryngology.  In 1911, Stucky traveled to Hindman in Knott County, Kentucky to conduct a clinic for trachoma victims at the W.C.T.U.
