Abstract
Pine Mountain Settlement School was founded in 1913, by Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long. The two women received ninety-five acres of land from William Creech for the purpose of providing educational opportunities for the people of the Pine Mountain area of Harlan County, Kentucky.

Abstract
The Board of Missions of the mid-western based Evangelical Church began considering the eastern Kentucky’s Red Bird River region for a home mission project in 1919. On the recommendation of Rev. William Buyers, a Presbyterian minister from Hyden, Leslie County, Kentucky, a Board appointed committee visited the area and found that residents were receptive to the idea of a mission.
