Rosenwald schools

Seven black and white 5 x 7 inch photographs of Middletown School taken in 1991 prior to renovation of the building and grounds by Berea College. Middletown Consolidated School was a Rosenwald schoolhouse built for the use of African American children in 1927.

This collection consists of digital copies of materials that document the Consolidated Rosenwald School in Berea, Madison, County, Kentucky. The copies were made in 2026 through the efforts of the Black in Appalachia organization of Whitesburg, Tennessee. Among the items digitized are elementary school commencement programs, newpaper articles, group and individual photographs.

Two large photographic portraits of businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald (1862- 1932)
1. 18 x 22 inch portrait possibly from the Middletown School, circa 1930. In poor condition (tears and water spots). Encapsulated January 2026.
2. 14 x 18 inch portrait of Rosenwald as an older man. This print is of fairly recent origin. It may be associated with the re-dedication of the Middletown School in 2007. [Log 9499 item #2 of 10]

This collection contains news releases, reports, brochures, flyers, small published and unpublished items, and other ephemeral materials produced by non-Berea College entities about the history and events of Berea College.

This collections brings together a variety of material from the Berea College Archives that help document the history of the Middletown School in Berea, Kentucky. Included are several oral history interviews and gatherings of Middle town alumni discussing their school time memories. Also included are recorings of the event marking the completion of the building’s renovation and rededication in 2007.
