Abstract Asa Martin was born 1900 in Clark County, Kentucky where he grew up hearing music at home and at various traveling shows. He tried his hand as an entertainer, first singing on small vaudeville shows and eventually on commercial recordings and radio with Madison County, Kentucky fiddler, Doc Roberts. Asher and Little Jimmie Sizemore Radio Program Reference Collection

Abstract Asher Sizemore (1906-1975) initially worked as a bookkeeper for a mining company in Pike County, Kentucky, but aspired to be a singer. In 1931, singing old-time and cowboy songs, he appeared on radio in Huntington, West Virginia, before moving to WCKY Cincinnati and then WHAS Louisville, where he was first joined on air by his five-year-old son Jimmie (1928-  ). Augustus Noah May Collection

Abstract Augustus Noah May (1876- 1944), a Magoffin County native, graduated from the Berea College Normal School in 1902 and went on to attend the Sloyd Training School in Boston in 1903. May returned to Berea in December of 1903 to teach Sloyd and Model School studies. May would hold positions at Berea, in the Model and Foundation Schools, teaching woodwork, Sloyd, and manual training and drawing until 1919 when he became a professor of Industrial Education at the University of Kentucky. Scope and Contents

Fifty-six audio field recordings (1970s) of interviews and performances that document the repertoire and styles of several Kentucky fiddlers, banjo players, and ballad singers mainly from the state’s northeastern region. Also included in the collection are a number of home-recording of fiddle playing, conversations and singing and recordings of radio shows and folk festivals.
