Andrew B. Humphrey Collection

Abstract Humphrey, a native of Hope, Ohio, attended Berea's Normal Department in 1867 and probably completed his studies in 1868 (no catalog exists for this year). Humphrey then studied a year in the College Preparatory Department, and in 1870 became a freshman in the Berea College Department. Anne Pirkle Genealogy Collection

Abstract

Great-granddaughter of James Williams Fee (John G. Fee's brother) and daughter of Virginia Fee Carpenter, Anne Carpenter Pirkle (1920 - 2007) was a dedicated family genealogist.  Pirkle compiled the genealogy charts of the Fee family which can be found in bound format at the Berea College Special Collections and Archives. Anne Pirkle attended the University of Alabama and spent much of her life in Tennessee.  She passed away in Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 86.

Appalachian Ballad and Folk Music Collection

This collection consists of both handwritten/typewritten and published texts and music notations dating primarily from the period 1911-1950. It includes ballads, shape-note and other hymns, rhymes, spirituals, shanties, labor, and commercial country music songs. Also included are related magazine articles, newspaper clippings, bibliographies, excerpts from music faculty annual reports, and correspondence between Berea College staff and music researchers.

Appalachian Church Minutes Collection

Scope and Contents

Minutes or other official records of several Appalachian church denominations, published in booklet form. Primitive Baptists, Old Regular Baptists, and other Baptist groups are most numerous, followed by Church of God, Lutherans and Methodists. The largest portion of minutes dates from the 1960s to 1980s, but the collection also contains minutes from early and mid-1800s.
