Abstract The New Salem Baptist Church in Harold (Co. Floyd), Kentucky, was one of the original churches to enter into the New Salem Association of Baptists (constituted in 1825 in eastern Kentucky, armed from Burning Springs).  Built about the same time as the Association’s founding, the New Salem Baptist Church was built in an area originally called Harold Gap (now referred to as Old Harold Road).  Association records show that Simeon Justice, William Salisbury, and Alexander Lackey were messengers...

Nora Morgan Lewis Folktale Collection

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of copies of manuscripts from the narrative traditions of the Farmer-Muncy-Lewis family of Leslie County, Kentucky. These 38 folktales are mainly from the repertoire of Sidney Farmer Muncy and were written down by her daughter, Nora Morgan Lewis in the 1950s.

Norfolk and Western Railroad Records

Abstract Chartered in 1881, the Norfolk and Western Railroad was created and organized when Clarence H. Clark and his associates purchased the property and franchises belonging to the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad Company.  The combined length owned by Clark and associates, after the rights had been bought in a public sale, was just over 400 miles.  By the year 1900 another 1,100 miles had been added including a branch as far north as Columbus, Ohio.  Growth was limited for the railroad...

Official records of the Berea College Normal School, 1894 - 1931.  The Certification Law of 1930, requiring teachers to have four years of collegiate training, effectively dismantled the Normal School (which had already been altered in keeping with other state and federal requirements).

Abstract Born in McCreary County, KY, Norman Ball graduated from the Berea College Academy in 1933 and from Berea College in 1939.  He enlisted in September 1942 and eventually served in North Africa, Italy, and France.  At the time of his enlistment, he was the fifth member of his family to join the service.  Ball received an honorable discharge in October 1945.
