Abstract
Carlos Cortez Coyle (1871-1962) was a self-taught painter who spent the early part of his life in Dreyfus, Kentucky. In 1889, he briefly attended Berea Foundation School where he was introduced to Appalachian arts and crafts through teacher and Director of Fireside Industries Jennie Lester Hill. Abstract
The Carr Fork dam was constructed by the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is located 8.8 miles above the mouth of Carr Fork, a tributary of the North Fork of the Kentucky River. It was created to mitigate flooding along the North Fork of the Kentucky River, improve water quality, and provide public recreation.

The Catawba Sanatorium, founded in Virginia in 1908, was a public institution for the treatment of tuberculosis. It was known as one of the most organized and best equipped institutions of its kind. W.W. Baker, born October 20, 1844, founded the sanatorium after he experienced the disease himself.
