John Bell Stephenson (1937-1994) was born in Staunton, Virginia, to Louis Stephenson and Edna Moles Stephenson. Karl T. Waugh was born to missionary parents in Cawnpore, India, in 1879, and attended primary and secondary schools in both India and the United States. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan (1900) and Harvard (1906) and taught at Harvard before going on to teach at the University of Chicago and Beloit College.
