The Appalachian Studies/Center Committee, also known as the Committee to Review the Appalachian Commitment, was appointed in 1987 by President John Stephenson to advise on matters relating to the activities of the Appalachian Center and the Appalachian academic program at Berea. Appointed in November 1989, the Committee on the Freshman Year was tasked with reviewing Berea's current student orientation programming and the planning of an improved orientation experience that would extend throughout the freshman year.
The original committee was chaired by Gail Wolford. Members included John Bolin, Connie Woods, Ron Shaheed, Katrina Shaner, and Barbara Wade.
