Fr. Albert Joseph Fritsch, S.J papers

As an ordained reverend, scientist, writer, and environmental advocate, Albert J. Fritsch lived a life devoted to God and Science. He was born on September 30, 1933, in Washington, Kentucky and obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemistry from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio (B.A., 1955, M.A 1956), as well as a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Fordham University in Bronx, New York, (1964).

His career included the position of research associate at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, chemistry consultant at the Center for the Study of Responsive Law, co-founder and co-director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest based at Washington DC. With this expanse of experience and knowledge, he founded the Appalachia Science in the Public Interest (ASPI) in 1977.

His work in these positions advocated against the harm of fuels on the earth, publishing technical guides for the people of Appalachia pertaining to preserving and protecting the environment. With numerous research and publications on the subject matter of environmental science, waste management, gasoline and fuel emission as well as writings on prayer, Jesus and service to God.

Albert J. Fritsch earned a Licentiate Degree in Sacred Theology from Bellarmine School of Theology in North Aurora, Illinois and pastored over several parishes across the United States. He died on March 5, 2024, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Michigan.
