Biographical / Historical

The Service-Learning Alliance began in 1990 as the Bonner Scholars program. Berea College was chosen by the Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, New Jersey, to be the pilot school for its new Bonner Scholars program. Launching with forty selected students known as “pioneer Bonners”, the program quickly spread nationally to include multiple Universities.

After the end of the Bonner Foundation pilot scheme, in April 1993 the program was renamed to the Berea College Service-Learning Alliance. The program instilled Service-Learning as a concept of combining both humanitarian service with academic pursuits. The office worked with hundreds of agencies nationally to establish volunteer or placement opportunities for Berea College students. Often students were welcomed and trusted to work with vulnerable populations plus organisations leading advocacy grassroots operations.
