Biographical / Historical
Established in 1976, the Mountain Association for Community and Economic Development (MACED), is a nonprofit organization and community development financial institution based in Berea, Kentucky. Early in their history, MACED was invested in supporting a smooth transition away from the coal mining industry towards sustainable enterprises in Appalachia to promote both economic and environmental stability in the region. This was accomplished through conducting research on environmental pollution in eastern Kentucky, providing trainings and educational resources for coal workers, and supporting the growth of small local businesses through their loan programs.
In more recent years, MACED has focused their organization’s efforts towards supporting businesses and organizations that benefit Appalachian communities. Throughout the organization’s history, MACED has led programs and projects to invest in local entrepreneurship and small businesses in Appalachian Kentucky. To fulfill their mission, MACED offers flexible financing, business support, and loan options for small businesses, while also creating educational programs and resources for Appalachian community leaders.
The Mountain Association collection demonstrates MACED’s continued dedication to supporting sustainability and economic development in Appalachian communities. With materials related to their investments in small business development and projects, this collection represents the breadth and growth of MACED’s initiatives and programs throughout the organization’s 50-year history.
