Scope and Contents
These audio and video recordings document the various events that occurred as part of a Symposium at Berea College November 12th and 13th, 1993 honoring Loyal Jones’ many years of service teaching and as Director of Berea’s Appalachian Center.
John Stephenson, Richard Drake, Helen Lewis, Jean Speer and Ron Eller talked about the state of Appalachian studies. Music was provided by Billy Edd Wheeler, Homer Ledford, Betty Smith and Jean Ritchie. Several readers read selections from Loyal Jones's writings.
Jim Wayne Miller, Grace Edwards, Bill Best, Tom Parrish and Bill Turner-spoke about Jones in the contexts in which they had known and worked with him.
Scholarly presentation subjects included Appalachian religion, Appalachian music and Appalachian humor. Presenters included Deborah McCauley, Howard Dorgan, John Wallhauser, Bill C. Malone, Jeff Titon, William Tallmadge, Jack Higgs, and Jim Wayne Miller.
