Biographical Notes
The resources in this collection relate primarily to James Slaughter “Seals” Combs (1846-1935), Mary Catherine Handy Combs (1850-1940) and their descendants. James S. Combs served in the 14th Kentucky Calvary, U.S.A., during the American Civil War. After the war, he worked as a surveyor, teacher, and merchant in Owsley County. Mary Handy's family moved to Kentucky from Virginia. She and James met during the Civil War. They were married in Booneville, Kentucky on December 27, 1870 and raised seven children. Their granddaughter, Betty Beulah Sternberg Overhultz (1903-1992) wrote this note that is stored in the accession file: "Old Records and papers dating back to the year 1800 - they were found at home after mother passed away. They must have been Grandma and Grandpaw Combs papers. How mother got them I do not know. B. Overhultz."
