Bibliography

Having attended Berea College affiliated schools from 1905-1916 and serving in the U.S. Navy (1918-1919), Luther Martin Ambrose (b.1898-d.1981) graduated from Berea College with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1920. Ambrose served as a member of Berea College faculty in both the Berea Academy and the College from 1920 to 1964. During this time, he would receive an M.A. in Education (1928) from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Psychology and Secondary Education from the University of Kentucky (1939).

While a faculty member at Berea, he served as an instructor of Chemistry and Head of the Berea Academy Department of Science (1920-1939) and Professor (1939-1945) and Chair of the Berea College Department of Education (1945-1955). At Berea, Ambrose conducted summer workshops in teacher training in Eastern Kentucky, served on numerous committees, was Director of the Rural School Improvement Project. Ambrose also served as an educational consultant and advisor (1950-mid 1960s) to numerous United States foreign assistance programs in India, Paraguay, Thailand, Pakistan, Liberia, the Sudan, and the Philippines.

After retiring from Berea, Ambrose taught at Eastern Kentucky University and the Hazel Green Academy. He also served as an admissions consultant to Berea College. Ambrose received the Berea College Alumni Association’s distinguished alumnus award in 1970. Luther M. Ambrose passed away in Berea in 1981.
