Content Description
The Collection of Dan Short prints and paintings (BCA 0295) contains examples of artworks created by Berea College alumnus Dan Short. Two are small paintings. Fourteen are large published nature prints on paper. Some prints include original wrappers with printed texts discussing Short's works and his approach to art.

Biographical Note
Dan Short was born in Whitesburg, Kentucky on November 8, 1951. His family moved to Ripley, Ohio in the early 1960s. In high school, Short studied with Ann Germann of the Canadian Academy. At Berea College, Short developed his interests in biology and wildlife art. After graduating from Berea with a B.A. in 1975, Short continued to live and work in Berea. Short's technique was influenced by master wildlife artists Roy Harm and Bill Zimmerman. He continued his studies at the American Academy in Rome and at the Tampa Bay Technological School of Design. A respected and successful nature realist who wanted his paintings "to be fine art as well as accurate renditions of the subject." Short died in August, 1988 at the age of 36.

Abstract
This collection comprises two small paintings and fourteen nature prints (12 subjects) made from original paintings by Dan Short (1951-1988). Short was a wildlife artist from Whitesburg, Kentucky, and Ripley, Ohio, who studied biology and art at Berea College.

The materials in this collection are arranged in two series:
Series 1: Nature Prints, 1977-1982
Series 2: Nature Paintings, 1973-1975
Custodial History
Thirteen of the fourteen prints in BCA 0295 were collected by Charles and Mary Workman, who donated them to Hutchins Library in 2024-2025. One print ("The Berea College Gray Squirrel") and the two small paintings were collected by Hutchins Library and placed in Special Collections and Archives prior to 2024.
