Collection of maps of the United States
Content Description
The assemblage of maps in this collection conveys visual information about the geography, geology, and topography of the United States, its natural resources, political subdivisions, and transportation routes that were developed during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the maps in the collection were originally gathered and utilized by the Berea College Geology Department. Others were collected by the college Library as part of the Weatherford-Hammond Mountain Collection. The remainder were found in the Special Collections and Archives without accompanying provenance data.

Abstract
The collection of maps comprises a variety of manuscript and printed scientific, transportation, and political maps that were created between 1793 and 1996. These items were collected by the Berea College geology department and campus libraries over the course of many decades. Most maps not associated with the geology department have no specific provenance data. The collection also includes a few manuscript maps and drawings. Items of special interest include older maps (1790s-1830s) and maps specific to Kentucky, Madison County, and Berea College.

The collection contains five series.
Series 1: Geology Department maps, 1892-1960
Series 2: Mountain Collection maps, 1822-1996
Series 3: Kentucky maps, 1793-1950
Series 4: Madison County, Berea, and Berea College maps, circa 1880-1950
