Abstract

John W. Hevener was a native of Dunmore, Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Hevener received his Bachelors (1956) and Masters (1960) from Marshall University and his Ph.D. (1971) from Ohio State University. He taught and served as principal at the high school level in McArthur, Ohio, from 1956 to 1961.  College level teaching included stints at Wisconsin State University at Whitewater 1966-1970, Mankato State University in Minnesota 1970-1974, and Ohio State University at Lima 1974-1989. Hevener is best known for his book, Which Side Are You On? Harlan County, Kentucky Coal Miners, 1931-1939.  At the time of his death he had done extensive research and preliminary writing directed toward a book length treatment of the labor troubles related to the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company in Widen, Clay County, West Virginia. Hevener’s other research focused on the social and cultural impact of Appalachian migration on Akron, Ohio.

Method of Acquisition

The papers were placed in Berea College's Southern Appalachian Archives by Mary Hevener in July of 1993. The collection was open for research in 2003.
