Abstract

The Glenmary Religion Survey was conducted in 1965 to identify individual religious attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of the residents of Lee County, Virginia.  The Survey was conducted for these three general reasons: 1) to identify personal religious aspects and beliefs about God, Jesus, and the relations the people interviewed felt existed between the divine and themselves, 2) the general moral attitudes and behaviors of the Appalachian region, and finally, 3) the relationship one has to a church, participation in church, attitudes toward the church preacher, Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, etc. The information in each interview includes sex, age, occupation of household head and wife’s occupation, marital status and family situation, church relationship, and education.  The objective of the Glenmary Religion Survey was to study different church communities and to answer the question, “What function does religion play in Appalachia”?
