Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of audio recorded interviews conducted by Berea College students as part of a January 1973 short term History 190 course taught by Dr. Richard Drake.

Interview topics include: moonshining in Perry County (KY), early medical practices and services in Clay County (KY), the Buffalo Creek, West Virginia flood, Black coal miners, Blacks in Middletown and Farristown (Madison County, KY), and a racial disturbance that occured at Berea College in December 1971. The collection also includes students' tape logs and written reflections regarding the interviews.

Original audio cassette interview recordings are found in Box 1. Interview tape logs, students' written reflections, student biographical information, and Drake's course description are found in Box 2. The collection was organized by Harry Rice, Berea College Sound Archivist.
