Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of audio recordings of musical performances and narrative made by Jean Ritchie during her time as a Fulbright scholar in the British Isles from 1952 to 1953. These recordings are a portion of her collecting in Ireland and Scotland. None from her recordings in England are included.

Abstract

Jean Ritchie (1922-2015), was a Kentucky singer and song writer. She recieved a Fulbright scholarship in 1952 and 1953, to study the links between her family's music traditions and those from England, Ireland, and Scotland. She tape recorded many hours of performances and interviews. Irish performers include Con O'Shea, Lilly Moore, Sarah Makem, Maggie Hughes, F. Keating, John Hoare, Michael Cronin, Micheal Reagh, Sean O'Tuama, Elizabeth Cronin, and Seamis Ennis. Instrumentation includes Irish pipes, fiddle, and guitar. Scottish songs and ballads are sung by Jimmy McBeath, Elizabeth White, Jeannie Robertson, Blin Robbin, Isaac Higgins, and others.Her husband, George Pickow accompanied her, photographing Seamus Ennis, Leo Rowsome, Sarah Makem and other musicians.
