Scope and Contents

Collected from various sources by Berea College Appalachian Center director Loyal Jones, the recordings in this collection consist of speeches and broadcast interviews of James McBride Dabbs and others dating from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Themes emphasized in many of the recordings include Appalachian and Southern life and history, race relations, integration, Southern identity, and the church in the South.

Abstract

James McBride Dabbs was a well-known author and prominent southern liberal during the age of segregation. He was a South Carolina plantation owner, Presbyterian Church elder, and author of The Southern Heritage and Who Speaks for the South. He also served as president of the Southern Regional Council and was a member of the Committee of Southern Churchmen and the Southern Student Organizing Committee.
