Kentucky River Folklife Project
Scope and Contents
One hundred thirty three audio recorded interviews and detailed content summaries (not transcripts) documenting the economic and social conditions of people who have lived or worked on the Kentucky River. Kentucky counties documented were Anderson, Carroll, Clark, Estill, Franklin, Gallatin, Garrard, Henry, Jessamine, Lee, Madison, Mercer, Owen, Powell, Rockcastle, and Woodford.
Narrators talk about industries and occupations associated with the river, various types of boats, floods, and accidents. Also discussed are river pollution, area geological history, social life, and recreation.

There are no restrictions on use of this material other than federal copyright regulations. Records can be accessed through the Reading Room, Berea College Special Collections and Archives, Hutchins Library, Berea College.
Biographical / Historical
The interviews were recorded by Berea College students and others in 1989 and 1990 as part of a project administered by the Kentucky Folklife Program, then located in Berea. The Berea students were Jennifer Ramsay, Katherine Silver, Lisa Kay Brewer, and Joel Miller.
The project was conducted in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kentucky Historical Society, the Kentucky Heritage Council, the Kentucky Oral History Commission, Berea College, the Department for Libraries and Archives, and the Berea College Appalachian Museum.
These same materials along with related photographs and project administrative records, are also accessable in the Western Kentucky University Manuscripts and Folklife Archives.
