Abstract

The Berea Interfaith Task Force for Peace was founded in 1981 as a grassroots organization of volunteers from various faith traditions sharing a commitment to peacemaking and social justice issues.  To this end, the group has focused its peacemaking efforts on the problems of the nuclear arms race, conflicts in Central America, and the local problem of nerve gas stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Madison County.  The group also organized the Mountain Refugee Project in the late 1980’s and has continued its PeaceCraft efforts since 1988. PeaceCraft, a project of the Berea Interfaith Task Force for Peace since 1988, has been working to advance peace through fair trade.  Currently located on Main St. in Berea, PeaceCraft volunteers promote peace through economic justice by selling Fair Trade merchandise from around the world.
