Scope and Contents

The William Goodell Family Papers (Part 2) consist of correspondence of numerous Goodell family members (both between each other and family friends and associates); writings, documents, and photographs of Goodell family members; documents, writings and printed materials of abolitionists; and correspondence, papers, and materials specific to members of the family of William Goodell Frost.

Biographical Note

William Goodell, a native of New York, was a prominent 19th century abolitionist and temperance reformer. Clarissa Maria Goodell Frost, eldest daughter of William and Clarissa Cady Goodell, was the mother of Berea College's third president, William Goodell Frost. Rhoda Lavinia Goodell, her younger sister, became, in 1874, the first woman lawyer admitted to the Wisconsin Bar.

Series 2: Writings, Documents, and Photographs of Goodell Family Members - Includes: the the writings of William Goodell, Lavinia Goodell, Maria Goodell Frost, and contemporary abolitionists; documents and family records; and photographs of William and Lavinia Goodell. Series 2A: Writings of William Goodell - A variety of writings and notes by William Goodell; also contains a small number of items written for or about William Goodell. Dates: 1800-1873, n.d. (1 ms boxes)

Series 2B: Writings of Lavinia Goodell and Maria Goodell Frost - Comprised primarily of titled pieces by Lavinia Goodell. Includes a folder of writings by Maria Goodell Frost. Dates: 1867, n.d. (.5 ms boxes)

Series 2C: Goodell Family Documents and Photographs - Documents, ledgers, and photographs of the Goodell family members. Dates: 1757-1830s, n.d. (3 boxes)

Series 2D: Abolitionist Documents - Includes: documents and printed materials; poetry by Gerrit Smith and Ann Fitzhugh Smith; correspondence between abolitionists and other. Dates: 1820-1855, n.d. (.5 ms boxes)

Series 3B: Frost Family Writings, Documents and Photographs- Includes a diary, clippings, legal documents, photographs and other materials of Frost family members. Dates: 1833-1966, n.d. (1 ms boxes)

Series 3C: Cleveland Cady Frost Records - Includes 1915 diary of C.C. Frost, photograph of C.C. Frost, and materials related to his death during WWI. Dates: 1915-1919, n.d. (.5 ms boxes)

Custodial History

The records of the William Goodell Family Papers, Part 2, were collected by William and Eleanor Frost.  They were given by Norman Frost to Sarah Frost Stamps. Photographs in Folders 10-33 of Series 3B, Box 1, were donated to the collection by Beverly Wright.

This collection could not have been processed to the extent in which it was without the work and expertise of Dr. Steve Gowler, Chester D. Tripp Chair in Humanities and Professor of General Studies at Berea College.

Processed, with the exception of Series 3A, completed October 2019. Finding guide and boxlist created at that time.

Processing was completed for Series 3A: Frost Family Correspondence in March 2020. Folders 10-33 were added to Box 1 of Series 3B in March 2020. Finding guide and boxlist updated at that time.
