Scope and Contents

One hundred and five glass photographic plates (glass plate negatives) by C.I. Ogg. Subjects of photographs include Berea College, Berea College Fireside Industries, Berea and the surrounding area (including forests), Appalachia, Eastern Kentucky, and the people of Appalachia and mountain areas.

Biographical or Historical Information

Coleman Isaac Ogg, 1855-1950, was a native of Rockcastle County, KY.  From 1880 until about 1940, Ogg often traveled throughout the mountains of Eastern Kentucky photographing the people and places he came across. Ogg also photographed Berea College life during that same period and operated portrait studios in London and Lancaster, KY. Ogg's work has been widely published over the past 135 years, but often without attribution. He is buried in the Berea Cemetery.

Arrangement Note

Numbering and descriptions of items follows original inventory list. 4x5 and 5x7 plates are arranged in boxes 1 and 2; 6.5x8.5 and 8x10 plates are arranged in box 3. For boxes 1 and 2, plates are 5x7 unless otherwise noted in description field.

Processing Information

Note: At one time glass plate negatives W1-18 had been loaned to Warren Brunner by donor. Brunner titled/labeled the negatives that did not have a title written on them.

Note: predominant dates of the collection are approximate. There are no known dates for any of the photographs.
