Scope and Contents

These are the papers of Roy N. Walters, teacher and Dean of the Berea College Foundation School from 1927 until his retirement in 1968.  Included in the papers are correspondence, writings and speeches, class materials and publications regarding teaching, records regarding his work with college and community organizations, correspondence with members of the Berea College graduating class of 1927, personal and biographical papers, photographs and scrapbooks.  Included in the papers are records and materials of Lillie Mae Crouch Walters.

Abstract

Born in West Virginia, Roy N. Walters graduated from Berea College with a BA in Sociology in 1927 and began teaching printing classes for the Foundation School.  He would quickly become a full-time teacher for the school and its Dean in1943.  Walters served as Dean of the Foundation School until his retirement in 1968.  Until 1958, Walters also served as the Dean of Men. While a student at Berea College, Walters worked in the Printing Department. Immediately following graduation he became an assistant to the Superintendent of the Berea College Press, Editor of the Berea Citizen, and taught classes in printing before becoming a full-time teacher at the Foundation School. During his time teaching, he also earned his MA at the University of Kentucky and, as a Dean, he earned his Ed.S. degree from Peabody College in Nashville. Walters married his Berea College classmate Lillian (Lillie Mae) Mae Crouch in 1928. The Walters had two children - Bonnie and Roy Jr.  Lillie Mae also worked at the Berea College hospital as a record librarian and later started the record librarian program at Eastern Kentucky.

Arrangement Note

Arrangement is series as follows:

Series 1: Correspondence- Walters' correspondence with various College and Foundation School figures including W. Jesse Baird, William J. Hutchins and Fracis S. Hutchins.

Series 2: Writings and Speeches- includes articles written for the Associated Press, papers written for research projects, pieces for the Berea Citizen column "School Talk," and various speeches given by Walters.

Series 3: Class Materials- inlcludes class assignments, papers written by students and lecture notes for classes taught by Walters at both the Foundation School and College.

Series 4: Organizations, Interests, and Other Work- materials including clippings, minutes and papers for many of the organizations in which Walters was involved with both as a faculty and community member.

Series 5: Evaulation Committees- materials including minutes and papers for evaluation committees for which Walters was a member.

Series 6: Berea College Class of 1927 - Correspondence and other materials related to the Berea College Class of 1927 of which Walters and his wife, Lillie Mae Crouch, were both members.

Series 7: Turkey Semester Abroad - Materials including correspondence and papers from Walters' 1964 semester abroad working in Turkey through the United Church Board of Ministries.

Series 8: Personal and Biographical - Correspondence, personal materials and photographs of Walters.

Series 9: Photography and Photographs - Instructional  materials and numerous photographs taken by Walters, an avid photographer.

Series 10: Scrapbooks and Ephemera - Includes scrapbooks from the Berea College Class of 1927 as well as various certificates and photograph books.
