Kentucky - West Virginia Fiddle Tune Transcriptions

 Collection
Identifier: BCA 0267

Abstract

These are fiddle tune transcriptions produced by three traditional music scholars whose Berea based research projects were supported by the Berea College Sound Archives Fellowship Program during 2006 and 2008 Erynn Marshall focused mainly on eastern Kentucky fiddle styles and song traditions in a similar way to her 1998 research conducted in West Virginia. In his transcriptions of tunes by several Kentucky fiddlers, Alan Jabbour paid particular attention to unison notes, a culturally significant fiddling trait which appears often in Kentucky and throughout the Appalachian South. Eric Strother focused on transcribing and analyzing tune performances of West Virginia fiddlers Melvin Wine and Ernie Carpenter. Links to full descriptions of each of their project findings are included along with transcriptions, notes, and tune recordings.
