Abstract

Joseph Ray, Jr. was born in Berea and was a 1952 graduate of the Foundation School of Berea College.  After attending Berea for a short period, Ray studied at the University of Kentucky where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History in 1956. Ray would then go on to earn his M.A. at Emory University before embarking on a long and distinguished career as a teacher, historian, actor, and director.  Ray spent most of his teaching career at West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Maryland, where he spent fifty years as an integral part of the Academy’s life. Throughout his life Ray acted and directed in one form of theater or another. Ray passed away in 2011 in Maryland.
