Abstract Jane Wilhelmina Pierson was born in Ohio on July 24, 1917, the daughter of William and Barbara (Ries) Pierson. In 1939, she graduated from Mercy School of Nursing and later completed Midwifery training in the Frontier Nursing Service (1952). After working for five years in the maternity ward at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, she served for two years as a frontier nurse on horseback in the Bull Creek, Kentucky area. Abstract William Ross Gordon began teaching at Berea in 1931 as a teacher in the Foundation-Junior High School.  In 1932 he was promoted to the college department where he spent the next 36 years teaching philosophy and religion.  Born in 1900 in South Carolina, Ross served in the United States Army from 1918 until 1922.  He later secured his bachelor's degree from Drury College and in 1930 received his Bachelor of Divinity from the Union Seminary in New York.  His Ph.D. in philosophy was granted by...

Elisabeth Sinclair Peck Papers

Abstract

Elisabeth Sinclair Peck joined the Berea College faculty in 1912 and taught history until her retirement in 1953.  Upon her retirement, she was appointed college historian by President Weatherford.  She served in this role until her death in 1968.  A prolific writer, Peck published numerous books on a range of topics—many involving the history and work of Berea College.

Alice Van Krevelan Papers

Abstract Dr. Alice Van Krevelan served as a guest lecturer at Berea from 1936-44, and after earning her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Rochester, she taught at Hollins College and Grinnell College.
